HANDHELD COMPUTING.

1) What are MID and UMPC devices? How do they differ. List atleast three examples of both types of devices & include images.
UMPC is a business class device ideal for enterprise users. It has been optimised for office - use application for instance, Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, the list continues. UMPC runs a heavy OS which can be seen as similar to Vista.
UMPC DEVICE.

MID DEVICE

MID is an ideal for consumer - class lifestyle. It works with a lightweight OS with a rapid startup much like Linux. Features such as media playback and web surfing is also included.

2) What are the differences between a Notebook handheld computing device and a Netbook handheld computing device?
Notebooks and Netbooks simply use the same basic form factor, the main aspect is the size. The form factor is of a computer with two major elements; a screen and a keyboard connected by hinges. Netbook computers are usually smaller as well as lighter than notebooks. There has not been given any specific size or weight classes for these computers. Netbooks have been created the way it is, for the Internet. It assists in communication, learning and viewing information. They have a compact form factor of around 7 to 10 inches and occasionally light weight. Netbooks consist of longer batter life than notebooks, and are less reliant on a charger. Netbooks can be easily carried and moved from one place to another, as it is very light and small. In the case of internet connection, they have many methods such as for intance wireless.
3) Describe the design & features of the Apple Ipad then discuss how it compares with a Netbook.
The Apple iPad consists of various features such as: facetime, HD video, pinch in zoom, applications, touch screen, 10 hour battery, amazing graphics, music, HD videos, LED display, YouTube, Multi touch, Wi-Fi and 3G, iBooks, high quality games, HD photos and many more. iPads are quite small and light, making it easier to carry than a netbook. Networks are preffered in cases of using for business and/or work, since it has a keyboard. iPad's have a touch screen which for many can be frustrating although for others, easy. The iPad is seen as more user friendly than a netbook, for example pinch in zoom.
4) Notebook, netbook & Ipad; which one would suit your needs and why?
If it were for me to choose, I would choose a netbook. The reasons for this choice, is first of all, since its portable, and very light, so I can take it anywhere. The battery life lasts quite long, so I dont have to worry about keeping it on charger all day. There are a variety of ways to connect to an internet connection, which is quite good, just incase the usual wireless, doesnt work. Netbooks, also have a keyboard, comparing it to iPad, it would be difficult to use, if I was to do work on it. Netbooks, in my opinion are better than notebooks especially, since I would like to take my netbook everywhere, and notebooks are quite big and heavy, otherwise notebooks would be my choice. iPads in my opinion for me would only be used for entertainment, such as to listen to music, play games, watch videos, and talk to family and friends, not to use as my other "computer". Netbooks is my choice, it suits my daily routine and is easy to work with.
5) If I was looking for a UMPC device with a screen size of 10 in or less, which would you recommend? Justify your choice. The UMPC device, I would recommend would be the Samsung Galaxy tablet. This tablet consists of a variety of features. Firstly has a 7 inch screen, creates voice and video calls as well as includes music, videos and several applications and games. This tablet, is quite light and small, making it easy to carry, but at the same time still having the amazing graphics and detail. Things such as internet use for the galaxy tablet, is well commended for its outstanding consistency.
How would you envisage students five years from now using one of these devices at school. Select any UMPC / MID device that you have researched that would meet a students needs. Justify your choice.
The Lenovo Ideapad P1. Lightweight Tablet with Digitiser, Multi-Boot Possibilities is the device I have chosen, that satisfies a students needs. Lenovo IdeaPad is an appropriate size, compatible with Windows and has a very lightweight body. The screen being a generous size of 10", with clear resolution and high graphics as well as being a touch screen, altogether is easy to use. In my opinion, this device would meet a students neccessaties and requirements, as it is portable, versatile and light weighted making it easy to take to places. The Lenovo Ideapad P1 can be used for work based tasks, music and media files, as well as just for your own amusement, with games and applications. This tablet would be worthwhile for schools also, as the cost is lower, and students would find it easier to hold, in comparison to laptops and desktops due to their slim lightweight bodies.

Broadband Research.

What is broadband ?
Broadband refers to a telecommunications signal or device of greater bandwidth. The broader the band, the greater the capacity for traffic. However, the term became popularized through the 1990s as a marketing term for internet access. Broadband in telecommunication refers to a signaling method that handles a band of frequencies.
Outline the methods of delivery of broadband (wireless, cable, ADSL and fibre) Identify the speed of each method.
Cable - 20megabit to 50megabit.
ADSL - from 256 kilobits to 20 megabits.
Fibre: 100 mb p/s
Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each method.
Cable:
advantages - isnt limited by distance, continuously updated, very fast in speed, has low pings, cheaper financially.
disadvantages - speed reduces as the amount of people accessing it increases, people spend more per Mb with cable then ADSL, less accessable in remote areas.
ADSL:
advantages - independant services, each subscriber is configured so no one else is on the same network, integration, high bandwidth, cheap line charges from phone companys, good for "bursty" traffic patterns.
disadvantages - no current standardization, expensive, dependant on distance, rural areas often get shorted so access, limited availability, new technology, low or no commited information rate, not as reliable as it should be.
Fibre:
advantages - immune to EFI and RFI, covers greater distances more reliable than wire, handles great speeds, can not be compromised by signal tapping.
disadvantages - not as robust as wire, more expensive to buy, more expensive to install, installed by specialists.
Wireless networks:
advantages - flexible if there is ad-hoc situation, implementation cost is cheaper than wired network, ideal for rural areas, ideal for temporary network setups.
disadvantages - lower speed compared to wired network, weak security, can be hacked anytime, complex to configure than wired network, effected by surrounding.
Give examples of broadband providers and identify the costs.
Broadband providers include; BigPond Broadband Access, Optus Internet Broadband, iiNet and iPrimus Super fast ADSL2+-Unlimited Naked Broadband.
BIGPOND BROADBAND PRICES.
The prices are varied according to which plan, the customer wants to choose. Plans such as:
BigPond, Turbo 2GB Liberty - 2GB (then slowed down to 64kbps) starting from $9.95.

The first one is the lowest, and the second, the highest.
OPTUS INTERNET BROADBAND.
The prices are varied according to which plan, the customer wants to choose. Plans such as:
Naked Broadband Plans - up to 500GB + standard modem - $79.99 per month.
Month to Month Broadband - up to 120GB + home phone - $89.94.
IINET.
The prices are varied according to which plan, the customer wants to choose. Plans such as:
Naked DSL - 300GB off peak and on peak - $119.95.

Mobile Broadband - 7GB off peak and on peak - 54.95.
Dial Up - unlimited - 24.95.
The Federal Government is thinking of rolling out a national broadband network (The NBN) Research the NBNN and find out:
The National Broadband Network (NBN) aims to change the way Australia accesses the internet - using the lightning-fast fibre optic technology. The construction of this wireless network connection will process this year, delivering its first services in 2012. The network will be a combination of fibre to the premises (FTTP), fixed wireless and satellite technologies to provide connections up to one gigabit per second. The expected speed, is one gigabit per second. The network is estimated to cost $35.9 billion, no expected price has been told yet, but many should be prepared for a high cost.
Do you think Australians should invest in the NBN?
In my opinion, I think Australians should invest, first of all, because its mainly most beneficial to them anyway, internet is the one thing, that every Australian needs, and most of the time use.
